The Asia Floor Wage Alliance (AFWA) is an Asian labour-led global labour and social alliance across garment-producing countries in Asia and consumer regions of USA and Europe. Founded in 2007, AFWA aims to build regional unity among Asian garment unions to overcome the limitations of country-based struggles in global production networks and holds global fashion brands accountable. 

AFWA is currently seeking a dedicated individual to join our team as a full-time Gender Justice Coordinator in India. The Gender Justice Coordinator is responsible for leading and coordinating AFWA’s Gender Justice programme in the garment sector. In this dynamic role the Gender Justice Coordinator will collaborate closely with women workers and leaders, civil society organizations, and various stakeholders throughout India.  

AFWA is particularly interested in hearing from women and persons with diverse identities.  

Responsibilities 

The Gender Justice Coordinator is responsible for leading and coordinating AFWA’s Gender Justice programme in India.   

  • Develop and implement AFWA’s Gender Justice Programme at the national level; and coordinate closely with the Country Coordinator, Regional Coordinators and relevant programme coordinators.
  • Stay informed about policies and laws regarding sexual violence and harassment in the workplace. 
  • Work closely with labour rights organizations and women garment workers and leaders; identify potential women labour leaders and develop their leadership.
  • Conduct trainings and facilitate the coordination of the national Women Leadership Committee (WLC).
  • Work closely with Country Team in synchronizing Gender Justice agenda of AFWA with other national priorities. 
  • Identify, build, deepen, and expand relationships with civil society organizations in particular women’s rights organizations in India.
  • Assist in implementation of research for the Gender Justice programme. 
  • Work closely with AFWA’s team in developing communications and campaign material on Gender Justice. 
  • Assist the Country Team with other relevant work that support the national advocacy strategy. 
  • Work with the broader AFWA team to support advocacy efforts for the rights of garment workers. 
  • Support the development of relationships with donors and other stakeholders to advance AFWA’s interests. 

 Qualifications/Skills 

  • Minimum a Bachelor’s degree (in development studies, gender studies, public policy, labour studies or related field) with more than 2 years relevant experience. 
  • Established relationships with local labour organisations, women’s rights organisations and human rights organizations. 
  • Good understanding of labour rights, gender issues, political dynamics and national context of the garment industry. 
  • Good understanding of women’s rights, labour rights and economic justice in a global context. 
  • Proven ability to foster strategic relationships and alliances as well as coordinate programme work. 
  • Good written and spoken English. Fluency in Tamil/Kannada and Hindi preferred. 
  • Self-motivated and comfortable working independently within agreed framework while maintaining communication with global team in different time zones and geographies. 
  • Ability to maintain focus in a multifarious work environment, comfortable with deadlines and field obligations. 
  • Experience in research and writing on gender issues, labour rights and global supply chains, an advantage.
