How your donation is helping workers run the kitchens

As we enter 2024, we are preparing to reinitiate our Community Kitchens Initiative , pioneered first in 2022, to again support garment workers and their families as they continue to face persistent and dire economic circumstances.

AFWA Sri Lanka, together with our partners and allies, extends our deepest gratitude for the extraordinary generosity we received from individuals and groups worldwide towards our Community Kitchens Initiative in 2022. This support has been paramount in sustaining Sri Lankan garment workers during a period of profound hardship.

We come to you again today – as the economic and political crisis facing Sri Lanka remains as severe as ever, posing significant challenges to the livelihoods of these workers.

With the cost of living soaring and many earning barely 80 – 90 USD per month, the situation has become increasingly dire.

Women workers, in particular, find themselves in precarious circumstances, having exhausted any savings they may have had during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Your support with the community kitchens in 2022 made a big difference to the workers. This year, life’s gotten even tougher with higher prices and taxes in Sri Lanka. It’s hard for workers to afford a decent meal,” remarked Chamila Thushari, Executive Director of Dabindu Collective Sri Lanka.

Community Kitchen Srilanka - AFWA

As families continue to grapple with the harsh realities of economic instability and inflation, your support can serve as a beacon of hope. Your generosity can make an immediate and tangible difference in the lives of Sri Lankan garment workers and their families.

The impact of your contributions in the past has been monumental, providing essential sustenance and hope to those in need. Yet, the struggle persists, and the need for assistance remains urgent.

In 2022, AFWA Sri Lanka, alongside our partners, conducted 15 community kitchens benefiting close to 1000 workers and families in Free Trade Zones (FTZs) across Sri Lanka.

We distributed over 10,000 cooked meal packets with nutritional value, specifically targeting the most vulnerable categories of garment workers, such as young mothers, pregnant women, elderly women, and those with health issues.

Together, we can make a meaningful impact. Your support will not only feed families but also provide them with the strength and resilience needed to navigate through these turbulent times.

Donate now and join us in our mission to support the resilient and hardworking garment workers of Sri Lanka.

Your contribution, no matter the size, will help us provide a lifeline to those in need. Thank you for your kindness and compassion.
