Case Summary: Rape and Death of a Young Woman Worker at an H&M supplier factory in India
Jeyasre Kathiravel, a 21-year-old Dalit garment worker at H&M supplier factory Natchi Apparels in Tamil Nadu, was found dead on 5th January 2021. Thangadurai, her immediate supervisor at the same factory, is in police custody and facing charges for murder. Multiple testimonies of women workers in the factory indicate that it was the unchecked sexual harassment in this H&M supplier factory that led to the untimely death of this young woman worker. Tamil Nadu Textile and Common Labour Union (TTCU), an Asia Floor Wage Alliance partner who organizes workers at Natchi Apparels, is demanding immediate action from H&M to ensure adequate and prompt reparation for the rape and murder of Jeyasre Kathirvel.
