In solidarity With Garment Workers Left Unemployed by the Sudden Closure of Next Manufacturing Pvt Ltd
We at Asia Floor Wage Alliance (AFWA) stand in unwavering solidarity with the 1,461 workers whose jobs were unjustly terminated due to the sudden closure of Next Manufacturing Pvt Ltd in the in the Katunayake Free Trade Zone, Sri Lanka.
On 19 May 2025, after completing their shifts — workers were informed late in the evening via WhatsApp that the factory would be permanently closed and sealed the very next day. No advance warning was given. No proper procedure was followed. As a result, workers—many of them women, older workers, and primary income earners—have been left without jobs, income, or recourse in an already difficult economic climate.

Brands: Tariffs And Economic Crisis Don't Cancel Your Accountability To Workers!
May Day greetings to you all!
On this International Workers’ Day, we rise in defiance of the rollbacks and repression of workers’ rights across garment production countries in Asia. As economic instability deepens across global markets, fashion brands are once again maneuvering to cut costs—at the expense of the workers who sew their clothes and sustain their profits. May Day embodies both a tribute to the historic victories of the labor movement and a collective resolve to confront present injustices. This year, the celebration carries an urgent call to action — demanding accountability, justice, and dignity for workers in global garment supply chains.
