WE ARE THE ONES WE’VE BEEN WAITING FOR
A Transnational Labor Movement Meeting on Building Women Workers’ Collective Power
Co-hosted by: Asia Floor Wage Alliance Women’s Leadership Committee (AFWA-WLC), Coalition for Labor Union Women (CLUW), and Global Labor Justice (GLJ)
Ten years after #MeToo and five years after ILO Convention 190, women workers continue to confront gender-based violence and harassment (GBVH) in the world of work globally. Women make up 80% of the garment industry’s workforce in Asia, yet abuse, exploitation, retaliation, and the denial of Freedom of Association (FOA) remain systemic features of the industry.
As part of a growing effort to eliminate GBVH in the garment industry, the AFWA-WLC, comprising women union leaders from South and Southeast Asia—is exposing GBVH in garment supply chains and demanding accountability from fashion brands that is binding and non-negotiable. In 2025, together with Global Labor Justice, the AFWA-WLC launched the Violence Out of Fashion! campaign to demand that global fashion brands eradicate GBVH through solutions that place women workers and their unions at the center. In Asia, garment workers and their unions have secured groundbreaking agreements that have been proven to counter GBVH on the factory floor – the Dindigul Agreement in India and the Central Java Agreement in Indonesia. These breakthroughs point the way forward.
But scaling this model to transform global supply chains requires building power across borders.
In the U.S. labor movement, women workers across industries have fought and won concrete protections against GBVH in labor contracts and laws. Our strength is unity – when we stand together, we win.
In November 2025, CLUW passed a historic resolution to take up the fight of women garment workers in Asia and hold brands accountable.
Now, with support from GLJ, we are announcing a powerful transnational coalition between AFWA-WLC and CLUW committed to demanding union-led responses to GBVH in the global garment industry.
